Put In at the River

The launch points around Sebastian are public and practical. Riverview Park, at the junction of US-1 and County Road 512, sits on the Indian River and is the most direct access to the lagoon's broad, shallow flats. It is also the site of the annual Sebastian Clambake Lagoon Festival, held over three days in early November—a weekend of seafood booths, historical re-enactments, and a kids zone, run by the Sebastian Clambake Foundation, which has given more than $1,000,000 to local charities since its founding in 2002. If you are paddling on a festival weekend, expect company.

For a quieter put-in, North County Regional Park on Fellsmere Road offers a different angle—fresher water, more trees, and a longer drive from the main drag. Rock City Gardens on US-1 is smaller and closer to the highway, useful if you want a quick session rather than a full morning. Park Place on West Lakeview Drive and Hardee Park on Barber Street are both neighborhood launches, fine for a short paddle or a picnic afterward.

The Lagoon Itself

The Indian River Lagoon is not a river in the usual sense—it is an estuary, shallow and warm, and it rewards paddlers who go slow. The water here is the same body that made Sebastian a fishing village before it was even named St. Sebastian. The town was established in 1882, incorporated as a municipality on 6 December 1924, and became a city on 18 May 1925. The river kept the saint's name even after the town dropped the prefix.

If you want to paddle without owning a boat, three operators work the Indian River Drive waterfront. Sebastian Watercraft Rentals at 1606 Indian River Drive has the highest rating of the group. Parks and Paddling Adjacent

Not every outing needs to be on the water. Sebastian Storm Water Park on Englar Drive is a working drainage pond that doubles as a park, with a walking loop and open space. Schumann Drive Park and Sebastian Florida Bark Park are land-based, the latter useful if you are traveling with a dog that needs to run after a morning in the kayak. Sebastian Barber Street Sports Complex and Sebastian Skate Park are both on Barber Street and draw a local crowd, but they are not launch points.

One oddity on the list: Tractor Supply Co. at 10735 County Road 512 is listed among parks and nature in the local directory. It is a retail store, not a park, but it is the closest place to pick up a cooler, rope, or basic gear if you are passing through and forgot something. A Tree 4 Me on Main Street is a tree service, not a park, despite its listing. Neither is a paddling destination, but both are worth knowing if you are in the area and need practical help.

The Deeper History

The 1715 fleet went down in a storm off this coast, and the value lost has been estimated at more than US$500 million. Mel Fisher opened a permanent museum in Sebastian in 1992, and the coast has been named for the wreck ever since. That history is visible from the water—the same waves that broke the galleons now break against the mangroves where egrets roost.

Pelican Island, declared the first National Wildlife Refuge in the United States in 1903, is a short paddle or drive north. It is not in the business list above, but it is the reason the refuge matters as much as the gold. The treasure is gone; the birds are still here.

The treasure fleet sank in a storm, but the water itself is the real inheritance. It is still here, still shallow, still warm, and still worth the time it takes to cross it.
